Tips for Bridal Gown Shopping
Allow yourself enough time to find the perfect gown for you. Ordering and alterations need to be considered.
It is best to set an appointment to shop.
Make a decision on the setting, time of day, and style of the wedding before you shop.
Limit your shopping buds to a few—no entourage please. Too many opinions (they’ll never all agree) can be confusing.
Don’t get overwhelmed. You do not have to try on every dress. Let the experts help and advise.
Be open to different styles—you may be surprised.
Stock gowns may be less expensive. Special order gowns may be more expensive and take longer to arrive. Beware of a fabulous deal—heavy discounts usually have fine print.
Make sure you are familiar with religious requirements regarding attire and color meanings.
Wear appropriate undergarments and shoes when trying on gowns.
(Remember mom’s "what if you were in an accident…")
Let the staff know your budget. Remember shoes, headpiece, undergarments and alterations need to be considered. Tell the staff your expectations.
Choosing A Gown Just For You
Our Suggestions
Brides (under 5 feet tall) wear a gown with a high neckline and empire waist, short sleeves or sleeveless with long gloves. This helps you look taller. The veil should not be long.
Brides (between 5 feet and 5 feet 5 inches) wear a gown with a belt and trim or ruffles that wrap around the dress will take away that "all legs" look. Off-the-shoulder, low necklines with billowy sleeves, and hats or dramatic veiling are also suitable.
Brides (from 5 feet 5 inches to 5 feet 8 inches), lucky girl, you can get away with most anything. You can make yourself look shorter or taller, to best suit the groom’s height.
Slender Brides, you’re the one we envy. You can add a few pounds by using a dress design with a heavier fabric, blousier bodice, gathers and narrow sleeves with large shoulders.
Heavy Brides achieve a slimming effect by wearing a dress with a high waistline or an A-line with vertical lines. Stay away from large ruffles or clingy fabrics.
Large Busted Brides, a v-shaped or high neckline with a keyhold yoke would be good. Avoid clinched waists, which would accentuate a large bust.
Wide Hips Brides disguise with a flaired skirt or an A-line dress. The wide bottom can be balanced by a broad collar, puffed sleeves or a hat. Diagonal waistlines also work well.
Fall or Winter Fabrics: Satin, taffeta, moire, velvet or heavy lace.
