Did you know… The reason we use Spike and Ferrule vs. Hidden Hangers?
We use the most common method of applying rain gutters to a structure…the spike and ferrule method. The spike is a 7 inch steel nail that is about the diameter of a pencil. The ferrule is the spacer that goes around the spike inside the gutter. When we drive the spike in, both ends of the ferrule tightly pinch the gutter between the head of the spike at he front and the fascia at the rear of the gutter. The gutter is then held solidly in place in the front and the back.
The hidden hanger is a bracket made of aluminum that clips inside the gutter and is attached to the fascia with a steel screw. The front of the gutter rests on the front of the hanger, but it is not attached to the hanger. The screw is driven though the rear of the hanger, the rear of the gutter and then into the fascia board.
Novak Gutters can install either system. We obviously have a preference supported by our experience and we are happy to answer any questions you may have concerning what is right for your situation.
Here are a few advantages to this system
Spikes last longer and are stronger than hidden hangers. We have years of experience with both methods and find this to be true based on warranty work. We use spikes 1/4" in diameter with a barb shank that works like an arrowhead when driven into the fascia board. This keeps them from coming loose as opposed to the smooth type.
The spikes and ferrule system allows us to easily place the gutter behind the drip edge flashing.
The spikes hold the weight of the gutter evenly at both the front and the back.
The spike and ferrule system makes cleaning easier because the inside of the gutter is smooth. There are no hidden hangers in the way.
It takes highly skilled installers like ours to develop the proper technique of installing spikes.
Hidden hangers were designed for ease of installation. Many companies that install gutters as a sideline to their core business (roofers, siding companies, etc. ) use hidden hangers because their installers are not skilled at driving spikes without bending them or denting the gutter.
The hidden hanger, just as the name would imply, does not show on the face of the gutter.
